Lesson One

Life as a daily practice! The foundation for your longevity health.

A number of key elements in life longevity are also key elements in some of my other life coaching programs, such as great health and wellness, having good stress management techniques, enjoying a healthy active lifestyle, and having some driving passions and sense of purpose in life.

I will touch briefly on these common keys in this Longevity Clinic, as well as go over some additional keys to longevity health that I have found useful.

What is life as a daily practice?

If you have ever tried yoga, tai-chi, or something similar, you will be familiar with the idea of daily practice. As a tennis trainer and coach, I drill this idea into my students all the time – the power of repetition. That is how you can do an amazing feat of yoga stretching, or hit a great forehand on the tennis court. You make something that is not so easy, look easy.

Now, we apply the same principle to longevity health. Everyone wants to live a long healthy life, but not everyone does, and for many it may even seem an amazing feat that only the lucky few area able to attain through luck and genetics. I’m here to tell you as your holistic life coach that it is possible, and requires the repetition of good healthy habits every day. When your every day is filled with good healthy lifestyle habits, you build strength, and health momentum.

How do you stay healthy on a day to day basis? That’s what this Longevity Clinic is all about: through super nutrition, regular stretching, exercise, drinking water, laugh, and then laugh some more, and finally have an active mind, no matter what age you are. Doing all these things is what I would call longevity training.

When someone asks you how old you are, how do you respond? Because of my longevity training, when asked this question, I feel like saying ‘I feel 10 to 15 years younger than my age,’ that’s how I really do feel. What about you? I know some people who say the same, but others who say instead something like, ‘I feel 10 to 15 years older than my age!’

Your longevity health and training starts with a great positive attitude! On this attitude we can build great health and an active lifestyle.

Eating less by eating better helps create a healthy lifestyle.

Every decade that we age, our body slows down and is less able to absorb vital nutrients to sustain us. Because of this, getting great nutrition is even more important as we watch the decades roll on by.

I go over healthy nutrition eating in detail in my Health and Wellness Clinic program, and you can find out more about that in my free lessons and tips on my health and wellness clinic page.

For the purpose of my Longevity Clinic, what you need to know is that getting super nutrition into your body is a great way to feel energetic, and getting active. More specifically, by eating great nutrition, the temptation to snack on treats and sweets will be less.

I feel better when I am eating less in terms of quantity of food, and more in terms of highly nutritious food.

Going back to the idea of lesson one – life as a daily practice – my daily routine of eating great superfood nutrition has built powerful health. This is the power of repetition over years. If you haven’t started such a routine, NOW is the time!

Longevity healthy eating tip – start a daily habit of getting superfood nutrition in your morning to give you energy for the day.

Due to my daily practice of superfood nutrition, I am very physically active. This is a HUGE contributor to my longevity health. Another benefit of being physically active every day is I tend to eat less than when I’m inactive. When I’m sitting around watching TV I tend to snack on sweets, coffee etc. As a lifestyle, this is not going to make for longevity health.

My superfoods of choice, and a great contribution to me maintaining a healthy lifestyle are blue-green algae and bee pollen superfoods. Check out my Health and Wellness Clinic for more information on this whole area.

Another great benefit of having the daily energy to be physically active is I drink much more water. How much water are you drinking every day?

Longevity Clinic tip – Giving your body a daily flush with pure drinking water is another key to longevity health.

Drink less sugar drinks, sodas, coffee, tea, and other beverages, and more water. The benefits of drinking water are multiple, and the easiest way I have found to do this is through my daily habit of exercise. Every day I spend time on the tennis court and I always drink water when I do this.

So, get your healthy nutrition eating going, get your daily exercise and water, and you will begin to develop more strength and longevity health. Our bodies love to be active, and thrive best when we are living a healthy lifestyle.

Following on from lesson two, where we covered the importance of great nutrition to gain energy to maintain a healthy lifestyle, we will now go over the flip side of a daily habit of being physically active.

Rest is a big key to being able to stay active. One thing I know for sure about regular exercise and a busy active lifestyle is the importance of decent rest every day. I try to get at least a good 8 or 9 nine hours of rest and sleep every day. If you are not physically active then you are already getting enough rest, and in this situation you need to get the ball moving, or the potato off the couch!

Going hand in hand with rest is some kind of daily habit of stretching, yoga, tai-chi etc. I can emphasis this point by telling you a brief story. I met a man who became a friend of mine when I was living in Hawaii, who was in his 70s yet was very physically active – like a man in his 40s. As I got to know him, I discovered one of his secrets – daily stretching.

He had a daily yoga and stretching routine. He was way more flexible than I was, and I was almost 40 years younger than he was! He encouraged me to do likewise, and told me I would never regret it as the years passed. I followed his advice and it is very true – it is a big key to me feeling 10-15 years younger than I actually am.

It doesn’t matter where or how you start this habit, just a few minutes of back and leg stretches to start with. Just do it!

I typically do about 10 minutes of stretching a day, and that’s all it takes. I often do it while watching TV. Don’t put off this critical part of your longevity health training another day!

Stay active in mind and body.

In lesson one we looked at the importance of a healthy active lifestyle. In this lesson we will look at the importance of keeping the mind active as the years and decades roll by.

I have noticed in my family, and in other families that people who age well, are very active in their minds.

Take my parents for example, now in their early 80s, are both in great health, stay physically active, and have very active minds. My dad recently finished writing a historical fiction account of the life of an Italian painter. He also paints and draws, and gives occasional lectures at their local adult education facility. My mum also gives lectures, and is an avid student of history.

All the people I have met in life who show longevity health have one thing in common – they are people living a very active in mind and body.

If you have no burning passion for your mind, you would be wise to spend time discovering passions you may have. Arts and crafts, reading, music,, mind games like chess are all great to try and part of a healthy active lifestyle.

What you don’t want to get into the habit of is just sitting in front of the TV. Becoming a lazy couch potato is great when you need to rest or heal, but it is quite deadly over time. People I know like this are much more prone to being overweight, having a higher potential for diabetes, heart disease, and other illnesses of an inactive lifestyle.

What I have noticed in myself when I become a couch potato is that I tend to eat more, sweets, chocolates, coffee, and light snacks.

Long life tip – develop a passion that is like a burning candle inside of you. It will give you an inner fuel to keep on burning for many years to come.

When I am engaged in some creative work of art, writing, playing chess, or some other mind stimulating activity, I lose track of time, and before I know it, it is time for lunch or dinner. I haven’t ben snacking all afternoon, because I was so engaged in my passion that I find an inner energy, my passion is the inner fire, that keeps my candle burning.
