 Life Coach Lesson One

Recognizing stress as part of your life

Learning techniques for the management of a stressed life is an important part of experiencing a life of high motivation, energy, and success..

If you don’t have good relief techniques then the stress of daily life will cause your brain to engage your flight or fight response, giving you more feelings of anger, frustration, and anxiety.

man-in need of quick stress relief

Not only so, by not having the techniques for the effective management of a stressed life your health will be impacted in a negative way. This occurs due to potential loss of sleep, increased blood pressure, tensing of muscle groups, neck and back pains.
This can become a vicious cycle. You are stressed out, and that depletes your energy, makes you tired, and less able to cope.
Over time this can lead to you succumbing to some kind of illness, headaches, or a nagging fatigue that won’t go away.
It may also lead to more major health problems such as cardio-vascular problems. As a result, bad moods and low motivation can begin to take control of your life. .

Stress is contagious!

stress and anxiety are contagious

A fascinating area of modern neuro-science has been the discovery of mirror-neurons. Studying these neurons has led to the conclusion that emotions are contagious—both positive and negative emotions. The contagion spreads at fast speeds (often in milliseconds) and is predominantly below our conscious awareness.
What this means on a practical level is that people set off stress in each other, often in milliseconds, and this can easily start a vicious cycle where you become a victim of a stressful lifestyle. The toll on you of this is huge, and the need for management techniques can be critical.

Coach Tip – use more relief techniques each day

The simple act of recognizing that stress is a constant presence in our daily lives is the first step of a management plan.
Once we are aware of our stress level, we can engage in management techniques —things we can do each day to reduce our stressful and anxious feelings and replace them with more positive and energizing feelings.

Techniques for stress relief and management can be listed in 5 main ways:

mindfulness,

compassion,

exercise and physical activity,

hope,

playfulness.

Some examples of management activities:

Having a moment with a sense of inner peace and calm
A feeling of excitement and eagerness in anticipating an event or the future.
A sense of being in the present, not thinking about past or future.
A pause or time out from what you were doing or feeling.
Meditation, prayer, yoga, tai chi, etc.
A loving moment with spouse or partner, significant other.
Doing something for another person.
Helping a friend with a compassionate approach (not trying to fix them).
Modest exercise you do regularly.
Thinking about values and purpose.
Talking with others about your shared purpose.

Life Coach Lesson Two

The power of our thoughts.

Life Coach Quick tip links

Tip – recognize the power of the mind’s stress response and negative thinking.

Did you ever notice that you can put a group of people through the exact same experiences and some will come out relatively unscathed, or even with flying colors, yet others will be unraveled and almost destroyed by the experience. A good example would be the intensity of a boot camp training for military service. Some pass all the tests, while others fail.

long term stress relief strategies

This is part physical, but also has a lot to do with mental attitude. Mental attitude really is everything when it comes to the management of stress. While the effects of stress are well established, getting effective treatment is not so easy. This is because mental attitude is unique to every individual.

A lot of mental attitude has to do with how positive or negative we are in our thought patterns. How do we deal with challenging experiences?

The power of negative thinking.

The more ancient parts of our brain have a constant and powerful influence upon our moods. These are called our reptilian and mammalian brain.

brainreptoid that creates stress and anxiety

This older part of our brain, the reptilian and mammalian brain can completely dominate your reality with constant flight or fight responses. These parts of our brain are programmed to be on constant alert to our senses to put us into the fight or flight response.

Scientists have even performed MRI scans as part of studies that reveal negative thoughts release dozens of fight or flight response hormones. The end result of this is that even a small amount of negative thinking will have a big impact on us. Negative thinking is powerful as it will create negative conditioned responses that will limit our ability to succeed in life.

Coach Tip – recognize the power of the fight or flight response and negative thinking.

How the brain learns. One way to stop our negative conditioned responses is to retrain our brain. When you are thinking, feeling, or doing something new your brain forms a new neural pathway, or circuit, in your neuro-network.

The power of negative and positive thinking.

Recall that the reptilian and mammalian parts of our brain are very powerful and will hold onto any negative thoughts and words we hear – stimulating the flight or fight response.

So a little negativity will have a big impact on us. We must counter this with techniques such as thinking positive thoughts.

In my own life, I have discovered the power of positive thinking to shift stressful thinking into an opportunity to becoming motivated for exciting new possibilities. We can create different responses to stressful situations that don’t lead to the same negative conditioned responses.

Creating more good moods to change our stressful reality
– a healthy stress relief method.

Life Coach Quick tip links

Tip - laughter is the best medicine!

At one time in my life, I was in a relationship that was filled with anger, fighting, a sense of being disrespected, and my needs were not being met.

I was in real need for some good techniques for workplace stress management. but having none, things went from bad to worse. I blamed the other person for all the relationship problems, but In time, I began using mindfulness to catch my negative thinking about this relationship and began to use techniques such as injecting positive thinking into my thought processes.

Anxiety-and workplace stress management
Other techniques I employed were to begin to say affirmations about the other person. being good, kind, and friendly. I began to also visualize (daydream) about us getting along better, laughing, and sharing good times.
Slowly as a result of using these techniques in my daily management of stressful conditions, I began to change, and as a result, the relationship changed. I was no longer reacting to situations with conditioned responses of anger and frustration. As a result, I saw a real improvement in my workplace management of stressful events.

I was able to get into more good mood spaces, laugh more at myself, and let go of my expectations of how the other person should be treating me.

laughter for quick stress relief

Coach Tip – laughter is the best medicine.

Laughter is one the best techniques for the management of stress. If you find yourself in a challenging situation and are feeling anger more than laughter, then this is a perfect time to just laugh out loud, laugh at the ridiculous situation you find yourself in. Just laugh!

In my personal and work relationships, I have learned that a quick chuckle, especially if things seem not funny, can give immediate and quick stress relief. Techniques like laughter help you relax, and takes an edge off any angry or frustrated feelings.
As a result of using these techniques of quick stress relief during relationship interactions, I became more accepting of my coworker and their behavior towards me.
That enabled them to more easily change their attitude. This process took time, but the relationship was saved from destruction and is now better than it was previously.

shaking-hands for workplace stress management

Crucial techniques in personal and workplace stress management.

The end result of changing my personality from a bad mood mindset to a good mood mindset in this workplace relationship was that it instigated a change in a difficult and frustrating experience.
If I had stayed in a bad mood mindset, I would have eventually lost all motivation to make this relationship work. By adopting a good mood state of mind, I was able to keep at it, stay motivated to make things better, and eventually, that is how things turned out.

Change your stressful personality with mindfulness and positive thinking techniques!

mindfulness for quick stress relief

A critical part of making a shift in your personality is to become self-aware. This is the role of mindfulness and positive thinking techniques.

Life Coach Lesson Four

Relationship and workplace stress management techniques.

Life Coach Quick tip links

Tip – using positive thinking techniques to retrain the brain to engage in more positive attitudes.

Whether we have a basic positive or negative attitude, we will find ourselves in relationships where conflict and the potential for anger and frustration are present.

Challenging relationship situations always present the possibility of a negative-chain-reaction occurring. What techniques do you use in this scenario? Turning this into a potential positive-chain-reaction is a crucial skill to develop in relationships.

Changing negative-chain-reactions to positive-chain-reactions.

I will use an example from a past work relationship to show how I turned a relationship that was full of negative-chain-reactions into one that became characterized by positive-chain-reactions.

The example is one that I know many people have experienced in their working life - a disrespectful superior. I will characterize this past working situation in general terms…

disrespect in workplace stress management
You are working a job and your boss likes you, you are doing a good job and getting praise that you feel you deserve for a job well-done. You are enjoying your work until a change is made – a new supervisor who does not care for the good work you have done in the past, and treats you with little respect. In fact, they seem to take a personal dislike to your personality. Not an uncommon situation, but what anxiety management techniques can you use to deal with this?

This created a great deal of anxiety for me, and this in turn led to negative thought spirals

I was seething with hidden anger. I was definitely in a bad mood space while trying to put on a brave and smiling face at work. I was unable to communicate honestly and I began to fear my supervisor’s presence which affected my work performance. This led to my supervisor having less respect for me.

seehting anger and stress relief techniques

This was the beginning of a negative-chain-reaction in our relationship. The more disrespect he showed me, the worse I performed at my job, which led to more disrespect.

While my thinking was going negative, my conditioned response for such situations in my past was to just take the disrespect, say nothing, and try to do my best. Yet at the same time I was building a secret anger.
In the past I would just take the crap until I had enough and then quit and move on to another job. However in this situation I really enjoyed the work and hoped it would not come to me quitting. My conditioned responses and my negative thought spirals needed to change.

Coach Tip. Retraining our brain to engage in more positive thinking techniques

You may not think that by just changing your thinking patterns that you could change a relationship based on disrespect, but that is not so. In some situations, you can. Such was the work situation I am describing.
I began injecting positive thoughts into my brain to overwrite negative thoughts. So, I began to think things like: My boss is a great teacher for me… I know we can become friends… He is really a good and decent person... In addition I began to visualize a time when we would get on together without all the disrespect.

Change-Your-attitude for quick stress relief
This first step of training my brain brain to think differently about this situation was the crucial step in changing my level of self-confidence about this situation.
In a short space of time by thinking differently about this situation I was able to gather the self-confidence to confront my new supervisor about disrespectful behavior – something I had never been able to do in my past.
It was a scary situation and I privately rehearsed what I was going to say when I confronted my superior. I was able to do it in a way that was respectful, yet challenging. I basically called him out on saying things to me that were personally out-of-line. Because of this, the whole dynamic of the relationship changed.

acceptance for workplace stress management

I had used the training of my brain with positive thoughts to drop my hidden charge of anger. I replaced the negative thoughts and feelings with a sincere desire to become friends and create a good working relationship. This is what in fact took place.

Now our relationship began a positive-chain-reaction of mutual respect and friendship that was of great benefit to our workplace. As a result, I began to experience mostly positive motivation and energy in this relationship. This enabled the positive-chain-reaction to continue.
What I did in the workplace is equally applicable in all relationships no matter how complicated or entangled.
